Professional Workshop: Looking Back, Moving Forward: Disability, Long-Term Health Conditions and Patient/Professional Relationships in the South Wales Coalfield

Wed 2nd April 2014

National Waterfront Museum, Swansea

Do you want to learn more about engaging professionally with people who are disabled or have long-term (chronic) health conditions? Do you have patients or clients whose lives have been shattered by industrial accidents and diseases? Do you see the catastrophic legacy of the coal industry in your daily professional work?

If so, come along to this workshop which will use historical documents, films and literature to shed light on patient/professional relationships in south Wales.

The day will include an introduction to disability history, followed by four discussion groups:

  1. Dying for Breath: The Human Costs of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  2. Fitness-for-Work: Achieving the Rehabilitation of Disabled Miners
  3. Mixed Economies of Welfare: Escaping the Shadow of the Workhouse
  4. Representing Disability: Stories from the Coalfield.

A concluding plenary session will be led by Professor Andrew Davies (Chair, ABMU Health Board) with Rhian Davies (Chief Executive, Disability Wales) and Professor Joy Merrell (College of Human and Health Sciences, Swansea University) as discussants.

There is no charge to attend the workshop, and complimentary refreshments and a buffet lunch will be provided. However, space is limited and so booking is essential.

To register, please download and complete this booking form: English / Welsh [Word doc], together with the provisional programme (including summaries of the discussion groups and details of parking at the National Waterfront Museum). E-mail your completed booking form to dis-ind-soc@swansea.ac.uk. The closing date is Friday 28 February 2014.
