Research Fellow, 1880-1948

Mike Mantin has been studying Disability History since writing his undergraduate dissertation in 2009 on the Victorian social group, the Guild of the Poor Brave Things. He submitted his PhD in 2012 on deaf education in nineteenth and early twentieth century Wales, focusing on the Cambrian Institution for the Deaf and Dumb. In 2012 his article on the role of oralism and sign in the Cambrian Institution was published in the edited collection Disabled Children: Contested Caring, 1850-1979, edited by Anne Borsay and Pamela Dale. Mike has also helped organise several events for the postgraduate community as part of the Postgraduate History and Classics Forum and the Research Group for Health, History and Culture at Swansea University.
